The texture we notice in certain light
There is a kind of light — usually morning, usually unflattering — that makes us notice texture we had not seen before. Pores that look a little larger than they used to. A roughness across the cheeks. A scar from years ago that has faded but never quite disappeared. These are the concerns that microneedling addresses.
It is not a treatment for lines caused by muscle movement, or for volume loss. It is a treatment for the surface — for the skin's texture, tone, and the small imperfections that sit close to the top.
What microneedling is
Microneedling — sometimes called collagen induction therapy — is a treatment that creates controlled micro-channels in the skin using very fine, sterile needles. These tiny punctures trigger the body's natural wound-healing response, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin.
It is a versatile treatment. It can be used to refine skin texture, soften fine lines, reduce the appearance of mild scarring, and improve the look of enlarged pores. It is suitable for the face and décolletage, and can be used on other areas of the body where skin texture is a concern.
How it works
When the fine needles pass across the skin, they create hundreds of micro-channels. The body responds to these as it would to any minor injury — by sending growth factors and collagen-producing cells to the area. Over the following weeks, new collagen and elastin are laid down, and the skin gradually becomes smoother and firmer.
This process takes time. The skin continues to improve for weeks after each session, which is why a course of treatments is usually recommended rather than a single session.
A course for best results
For most concerns, we recommend a course of three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. The exact number depends on what we are treating — mild texture concerns may need fewer sessions, while scarring typically requires more.
Results build gradually over the course and continue to improve for weeks after the final session. We will discuss the likely timeline at your consultation and be honest about what microneedling can achieve for your specific concerns.
What happens at your appointment
Sarah begins with a full skin assessment and medical history. She will examine the areas you are concerned about and discuss whether microneedling is the right approach — or whether a different treatment, or a combination, might serve you better.
The treatment itself takes around thirty to forty minutes. A numbing cream is applied beforehand to keep you comfortable. The microneedling device is then passed across the treatment area in controlled, even passes. Your skin will look red and feel warm immediately afterwards — similar to a mild sunburn — but this typically settles within a day or two.
Aftercare and what to expect
After treatment, your skin will be sensitive. We will provide detailed aftercare guidance — including which products to use, which to avoid, and how to protect your skin in the days following treatment. It is important to avoid sun exposure and active skincare ingredients during the healing period.
Most people return to their normal routine within one to two days, though you may prefer to wait until the redness has fully settled before social plans.
